I’ve never received a massage or bodywork before, is there any etiquette I should know about?
Bodywork is best received after you have time to digest your food. Please shower before your session if you just had a workout.
Is it true that massage needs to be painful to be effective?
No. There are many gentle yet effective massage modalities. When we talk about deep pressure work it’s only effective when it’s needed. On the contrary, forceful pressure causes tissue to tighten from bracing the force, we end up fighting each other instead of engaging the right therapeutic depth. If you are unable to breathe into the pressure, it’s probably too deep. Deep tissue work happens not with force, but with patience. It takes time for tissues to warm up, and for the mind to let go of the bracing. Healing happens when we are not in the state of fight or flight.
How many sessions do I need to see results?
It depends. There’s no magic number. Some of my clients are seeing improvements after one session while others take a series of sessions. Keep in mind, there are other factors that influence your healing process: the history of discomfort, lifestyle, diet, sleep quality, interpersonal relationships, work and environmental stress. At the end of every session, we will go over a self-care plan to help support your progress.
Is lying still important while receiving massages?
Actually some techniques such as active and resistant stretching require you to move. It’s not uncommon during a Myofascial Release or CranioSacral Therapy session clients start to unwind.
What is unwinding?
Unwinding happens naturally during our sleep, it’s our innate wisdom to release stored emotional tension. Myofascial Release or CranioSacral Therapy often creates an environment where receivers can enter into a state of authentic healing. The practitioners are supporting receivers’ bodies without determining the movement pattern, without force, and without judgment.
